Reminiscence is a composition that reflects my journey of wanting a relationship with a person who did not want one with me. Each section conveys a range of emotions including longing, love, and sad acceptance. The piece begins with a trumpet solo, my reluctant assertion of my feelings. This theme returns twice as those feelings grow stronger, only to be let down in the end. The prominence of the flute throughout the work represents the person who inspired my feelings and this piece, as she was a flautist. The music moves through different emotional phases, from moments of hopeful love to anger to sadness, demonstrating the complex dynamics of unreciprocated feelings. As the composition moves towards a conclusion, it transitions from a brief sense of triumph—a moment when I thought my feelings might be reciprocated—to a melancholic conclusion, acknowledging the bittersweet reality that love was never mutual. Despite the somewhat sad emotional journey of this piece, I am grateful that the relationship never materialized. Writing this piece has led me to learn a lot about myself, and brought me closer to someone else, who has made me extremely happy.
